Chaolung Sukapha |
Asom Divas, also known as Sukapha Divas, is celebrated every year on December 2nd to honor Swargadeo Sukapha, the legendary founder of the Ahom dynasty in Assam. His arrival in Assam in 1228 CE marked the beginning of a new era in the region's history, laying the foundation for a united and prosperous Assamese identity.
He is widely referred to as the architect of ‘Bor Asom’ or ‘Greater Assam’ because of the amicable relationship he developed with the tribal communities living in Assam at the time of his arrival. He was revered for being a strong, courageous, and fearless leader who played a vital role in unifying the various indigenous ethnic groups of Assam.
Sukapha's Journey to Assam
Chaolung Sukapha, who was a prince from the Tai state of Mong Mao, close to present-day Ruili in Yunnan, China, embarked on a historic journey with about 9,000 followers, including soldiers, women, and children. In 1228 CE, after traversing treacherous terrains and crossing the Patkai hills, he entered the Brahmaputra Valley. His journey was guided by diplomacy and a keen understanding of local conditions, allowing him to establish peaceful relations with the indigenous tribes of Assam.
Establishment of the Ahom Dynasty
After reaching the Brahmaputra Valley, Sukapha chose Charaideo as the first capital of his kingdom. He was a visionary leader who unified various ethnic groups, including the Bodo-Kachari and other local tribes. Sukapha avoided unnecessary conflict, instead emphasizing peaceful coexistence and cultural assimilation. This strategy laid the groundwork for the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for nearly 600 years, significantly influencing the region's history, culture, and administration.
Sukapha’s Reign and Legacy
Sukapha's reign marked the beginning of a centralized administration in Assam. His policies were aimed at unifying diverse communities while respecting their unique traditions. The Ahom dynasty under his successors became a symbol of Assamese resilience, particularly in resisting Mughal invasions in later centuries. Sukapha is revered not just as a ruler but as the architect of Assamese culture, blending the Tai-Ahom traditions with indigenous practices.
